Siberian Huskies were used for centuries as watch dogs. They originated off the eastern Siberian peninsula where they were also used to pull sleds and to herd reindeer. It’s no wonder that these dogs are a part of the working group. They’re a hardy breed with unbelievable stamina. Because of their great speed, huskies were a sought after prize by Alaskan fur traders who wished to used the dogs in their Arctic races. Perhaps this is why they are so often referred to as sled dogs. Huskies made their debut in an Alaskan race in the early 1900′s when mushers took their dogs on a 408 mile long dogsled race. When a diphtheria epidemic broke in Nome Alaska in 1925, the Siberian Huskies were used to bring the much needed medicine to the sick people. This undoubtedly had something to do with the dogs ever rising popularity. It has also been reported that these dogs were used in Antarctic expeditions. Search and Rescue Units that were sent out during World War II were said to have used Siberian Huskies on their missions. The husky is a multi-talented breed. They excel in racing, sledding and carting. Surprisingly enough, it wasn’t until 1930 that the American Kennel Club finally recognized the Siberian Husky.

Dogs are classified into groups based on specific traits. The working group is comprised of very powerful breeds. The Siberian Husky is one of these strong working dogs. Siberian Huskies are a medium sized dog. An interesting characteristic of the Siberian Husky is the color if their nose. The color of their noses vary and it is usually directly correlated to the color of the dog’s coat. Black, gray and tan huskies will almost always have a black nose. The copper and white huskies will usually have a liver colored nose and white Siberian Huskies will have a flesh-colored nose. Huskies are known for their distinctive blue eyes. However, a lot of them will have brown or amber eyes which are also very beautiful. It is also common for husky puppies to be born with two different colored eyes. You may see huskies with one blue eye and one brown eye. This is often referred to as bi-eyed. Huskies have triangular shaped ears that do not need to be cropped. They will naturally stand high on their head. Another distinctive trait of the Siberian Husky is their curled tail. Because they are known as “snow dogs” they have special designed paws that grip the ice and keep the heat in their bodies. The huskies double coat is truly amazing. Because of this extremely thick coat, Siberian Huskies can withstand temperatures as low as -55 degrees Celsius. Some of the most common coat colors are black and white or gray and white. However, red-orange and white, brown and white, and silver and white are also found in large numbers. Husky puppies can also be born pure black or pure white. A truly beautiful feature of the husky is their unique face mask.
